What is Windows Stereo Mix?

Stereo Mix is a built-in Windows input that captures whatever your speakers are playing, so you can record or share system audio with no extra hardware. It is a single, all-or-nothing loopback, often disabled or missing, and here is exactly what it does and where it falls short.

The short answer

Stereo Mix is a recording device that your Windows sound driver can expose, and it captures the mix of everything on its way to your speakers. Music, a browser tab, a game, a call, and system notifications are all blended into one stream, and Stereo Mix hands that blended stream back to you as something you can record. It shows up in the Windows Recording tab right next to your real microphone, and any app that can pick a microphone can pick Stereo Mix instead.

What Stereo Mix can and cannot do
