What is saturation?

Saturation is a gentle, musical way of pushing a signal so its peaks round off instead of getting cut. That rounding quietly adds new harmonics, and those harmonics are the warmth and character people chase.

The short answer

Saturation is what happens when you push a signal hard enough that it can no longer follow the input perfectly, so its loudest peaks get gently rounded off rather than passed through untouched.
